Preparations for my internship
In 2018 I started studying International Business at Avans University of Applied Sciences in Den Bosch. I myself lived with my parents in a small town next to Arnhem, but I really didn’t feel like traveling for 1.5 hours every day. In November I quickly moved to Den Bosch to build my new life here. I would stay here for two years, because I would go on an internship abroad in September 2020. The corona crisis had also broken out and the predictions for doing an international internship looked bad. And indeed, I received a message that unfortunately the party could not take place. Still, I was determined that I wanted to do my internship abroad, which resulted in a study delay. Never did I expect I would have two internships.
In April I decided to look for an internship in Spain, because the situation around corona couldn’t stop life for that long, could it? Finding an internship turned out to be very difficult because many companies did not dare to take on interns abroad. Luckily I heard about Juggling.es through my aunt. I quickly got in touch and within a few weeks I had an internship! The internship was not quite in the industry that I found interesting, but because it was already so difficult to find an internship at all, I gave it a chance: I was already happy that I was allowed to embark on the adventure in Spain. In August I heard that all countries were going yellow and before I knew it I was on a plane to Spain!
Setback
Once I arrived in Spain, I first took a nice two-week holiday in Malaga. How I was enjoying! Anyway, of course I came to Spain for my internship. On September 1, I was allowed to start at my internship company. I was expected at half past 9, but of course I was there a little earlier. I was warmly welcomed and given an explanation about the company. Days went by and I gradually found out that I actually didn’t like it very much. Still, I thought I should keep trying: maybe I just had to get used to the ‘real work life’?
After trying for two weeks, thinking a lot and calling family and friends, I came to the conclusion that this didn’t make me happy at all. I then went to Joost van JongLeren.es to raise this. After a good conversation with Joost, I went to my internship company to tell them that this was not what I was looking for and I stopped immediately. I found it quite exciting to start this conversation, but luckily my boss didn’t take it personally at all and he accepted this.
And then? | Two internships
After two weeks, Joost called me and told me that he had found another potential internship company for me, and this time one that was really in my area of interest. Two internships?Soon I was allowed an interview with this company. After my introductory meeting with this company, I was immediately enthusiastic and I soon received good news: I could start right away!
Conclusion
I’ve been working at my current internship company for seven weeks now and I’m still very happy with the choice I made. Not once have I regretted my decision to leave my former internship company. Because I made this choice for two internships, I am also stronger in my shoes. I learned a lot from this and can’t wait to see what else is to come. I am now halfway through my internship, so I only have ten weeks ahead here in Spain… ☹ Time flies when you are having fun!
