On February 8, my good friend Tom and I flew to Málaga to do a 5-month Marketing internship here. In the weeks leading up to our flight we couldn’t stop talking about what we all wanted to do and what we would experience and now the time had come. We landed on Friday evening and immediately went to discover the nightlife on Saturday, which was certainly not disappointing!
First weeks in Malaga
We really enjoyed the first week of internship, with the JongLeren.es drink on Friday evening as a conclusion. The drinks were organized very nicely, and many friendships have arisen, people we would deal with for the rest of the internship period. The city of Málaga was everything I hoped for and more, the weather, the beach, the people, the quality of life, in short: fantastic! In addition, I also had a very nice internship and nice colleagues. It was the perfect recipe for a fantastic 5 months.
Málaga is a beautiful city and has something to offer for everyone. From the nightlife and the beach, to a huge cultural heritage. Just to name a few examples; the beautiful Alcazaba, Teatro Romano and Catedral de Málaga. What quickly struck me were the clean streets, which are cleaned every night. The people in Málaga are super friendly and really enjoy it when you try to speak Spanish to them, however poor that may be at times.
Green parrot
The first moment of realization that I was in a completely different area than what I was used to came when I saw a green parrot sitting among the pigeons. I was completely surprised, it turned out to be a Monk Parakeet, which are present in large numbers in the city. I walked for hours through the city to discover what there was to do, I couldn’t get enough. I thought nothing could happen to ruin my time in Málaga.
COVID-19
Unfortunately, a spanner in the works was thrown. Due to the developments surrounding the Coronavirus, my school felt compelled to bring me back to the Netherlands. As stubborn as I am, I didn’t want to go back at first, but after a week of messages from friends who also went back to the Netherlands and emails from school, Tom and I decided to fly back anyway. However, we were allowed to continue our internship from the Netherlands and return to beautiful Málaga when the situation in Spain improved.
At the moment we both work from home, which is very doable with today’s technology. I have a Zoom meeting several times a week with my internship supervisor in Málaga, I can still carry out my research for school perfectly and I still have plenty to do, so fortunately I am not bored. Nevertheless, I hope that we can return to Málaga soon to complete our internship and our adventure here!
