When searching for accommodation in Spain, there are several factors to consider. We have often encountered students reaching out to us because, for example, they can’t find anything, or because they have been scammed by making a transfer from the Netherlands to reserve an apartment, which ultimately turns out to be a scam. To reduce the chance of this happening, we’d like to give you some tips:
- Prepare yourself for the fact that homes in Spain may meet different standards than in Northern Europe.
- Do not expect to rent a holiday home with all kinds of luxury facilities.
- Translate the contract into your own language.
- Check Facebook groups to see if anyone has something available.
- Don’t transfer money to real estate companies without first researching and reading the reviews of the company. Also, always ask if you can schedule a viewing, even if you are not in Spain at the time. If a landlord says this is not possible, we strongly advise against making any payments.
- Apartments may look different in person than in photos. Therefore, we strongly recommend visiting the apartment.
- In addition to rent, you may incur additional costs such as commissions, gas, water, electricity, wifi, or service charges.
If you still want us to find accommodation for you, here’s how we work:
- We search for accommodation that meets your requirements, but we will let you know beforehand if this is realistic within your budget.
- We always visit apartments to see if they look good, if they meet the information provided online, and to take photos/videos and send them to the student.
- We handle communication with the owner/agent. In Spain, they generally do not speak much English, so we can communicate with them more easily in Spanish.
- The rental contract is almost always drawn up in Spanish.
- We will go through the contract with you so that you understand everything it entails.
- If there is any issue with the accommodation during your stay that you cannot resolve yourself, we are happy to help you resolve it and can also contact the landlord on your behalf.
