On Tuesday 4 February the time had come, after a few months of anticipation I finally left for Spain. I was super excited about the adventure that awaited me. My mother accompanied me for the first few days, not only for fun but also to help prepare my room and do the first shopping and transport. Because I went to live and do an internship in the beautiful city of Estepona, which is about an hour’s drive from Malaga Airport by car.
Why Estepona?
I don’t really have a clear answer to this. During my interview with the real estate agency where I was going to do my internship, they indicated that they needed interns in Mijas and Estepona. I had indicated that I would like to work in one of these cities, after poking around on google I chose Estepona. Actually purely because it looked beautiful on the pictures and was on the coast. This may sound strange but I had never been to Spain until now, everything was new to me.
Estepona is a city with about 70,000 inhabitants. The city is known, among other things, for the murals that you can see throughout the city. I have seen some of them myself and it is very impressive to see. What also struck me is that the city is very clean, there are people working every day to keep the streets and parks clean and tidy. The people are also very friendly and helpful, with hands and feet they always try to help you as far as they can. Even at night the city feels very safe in my opinion. I never once felt unsafe.
COVID-19
Unfortunately, like several students, I too had to interrupt my internship due to the corona virus. I found this decision very difficult to make. Because I really enjoyed my internship and in the meantime I had built up a very good relationship with our team assistant Amber Jacobs. At first I planned to stay.
However, the situation deteriorated rapidly, within three days the travel advice from the Netherlands for Spain was set to orange, which meant that you were only allowed to travel there if necessary. I also received a serious e-mail from my school that had made me think.
I then spent a long time on the phone with my parents and my internship supervisor and then finally made the decision to go home. What made the decision a little easier was that my parents had said that I could come back as soon as the situation was good again. To this day I keep hoping that I can go back. As long as you keep believing in something, I myself believe that it will eventually happen!
